This is the hardest quiz in our Music category and the only one that reaches properly back in time. Twenty questions spanning roughly six decades of recorded music, from the bands that defined the album era through to records released in the last few years. Rock, pop, ballads, film music, and one or two entries that became global phenomena for reasons nobody fully predicted. The difficulty comes from the range rather than from obscurity. Nothing in here is a deep cut, and most of the songs are ones you could hum. But knowing a song and being able to attach it to the correct artist, or recognising it from its opening line rather than its chorus, are separate skills, and the second one is what is being tested. Listeners who grew up in one particular decade will find that stretch trivial and the rest much harder, which is the intended shape of it.

The oldest material here comes from bands whose catalogues have never left circulation, and the newest from the streaming era. That spread is deliberate: no single listening life covers all of it, so nobody starts with an advantage across the whole quiz.
Expect to find one stretch easy and another genuinely difficult. Where that boundary falls says more about when you were listening than about how much you know.
Songs are stored in memory by their most repeated part. Ask someone for the chorus of a famous track and they will produce it instantly; ask for the first line and a lot of people go blank on a song they have heard a thousand times.
Several questions here quote openings. If one looks unfamiliar, try continuing it in your head rather than trying to identify it cold.
A few of the songs in this quiz are notable less for their music than for what they did: the first to reach some threshold, the one that outsold everything before it, the one that turned a genre from a subculture into the mainstream, the one whose video reset expectations of what the internet could do to a song.
Those milestones are part of general music literacy, and questions about them are asking whether you know why a record mattered, not just that it existed.
A number of the most globally recognised songs of the last forty years are inseparable from a film, either written for one or revived by one decades after release. In some cases the film is now better remembered than the original release.
If a question mentions a soundtrack, that pairing is what it is testing.
Several performers here had significant careers on both sides of that line, fronting a group before going solo or the reverse. The wrong options frequently exploit that, offering a band when the answer is a person or the other way round.
Read carefully for whether a question is asking who performed something or who wrote it. They are not always the same.
Opening lines are harder than choruses. A song can be completely familiar and still be unrecognisable from its first few words, because that is not the part anybody remembers.
