About This Quiz

There is now a category of song that is enormously famous and almost entirely anonymous. You have heard it hundreds of times underneath short videos, you would recognise the first two seconds instantly, and you have no idea who made it or what it is called. Some of these tracks are decades old and were commercial failures on release, rediscovered by an algorithm and given a second life far larger than their first. Others were made specifically for this ecosystem. This quiz is about that world: fifteen questions on the songs that became internet furniture, spanning several internet-native electronic scenes as well as indie and synthwave, plus the slowed and remixed versions that often overtook the originals. It is rated Easy because recognition rates are extraordinarily high. Naming them is the part almost nobody can do, and that gap between total familiarity and total ignorance is exactly what makes it fun.

The algorithm is the tastemaker

Songs no longer need radio, a label or a chart to reach an enormous audience. A short-video platform surfaces a fifteen-second fragment, that fragment gets used in millions of clips, and a track that sold almost nothing on release becomes globally recognised without ever being deliberately promoted.

Several entries here are exactly that: releases that flopped commercially and then found their audience years later through people who had no idea when they were made.

Genres you have heard without naming

A lot of this music belongs to internet-native genres built on distorted low-end and sampled cowbells, or on nostalgic synthesiser textures borrowed from eighties film scores. These scenes are largely anonymous, distributed through streaming and video rather than through any traditional industry.

Knowing the genre names is worth a couple of questions on its own, and they are the sort of words you have seen in video titles without ever looking up.

The edit is often more famous than the song

Slowed, reverbed, sped up, pitched down: a large share of viral tracks circulate in a modified version that sounds noticeably different from the release. Many listeners have only ever heard the modification and would not recognise the original.

That produces a genuinely strange situation where the most famous version of a recording is not the one the artist put out, and it is worth keeping in mind when a question sounds almost right.

Stylised names are part of the culture

Artists in these scenes tend to write their names with unusual capitalisation, slashed vowels and symbols instead of letters. It makes them visually distinctive and very hard to recall from memory.

You will probably recognise the correct answer when you see it even if you could not have produced it. That is the intended experience.

The Challenge

You know these songs and you do not know their names. The whole quiz sits in that gap, and the artist names are frequently stylised in ways that are easier to recognise on sight than to recall unprompted.
