About This Quiz

Indian popular music runs on a system that has no real equivalent anywhere else. For most of a century the songs that mattered came from films, sung by playback artists who never appeared on screen and written by composers credited as music directors, and that arrangement produced careers of a length and volume that would be implausible in any other industry. This quiz covers that world. Fifteen questions connecting songs to the voices that recorded them and the composers who built them, running from the giants of the mid-century through to the singers dominating streaming now. It also crosses languages rather than staying in Hindi cinema, because some of the biggest Indian soundtracks of the last decade came out of the southern industries and travelled everywhere. Rated Easy, and fairly so: almost everything here was inescapable in India at the time of release.

Topics Covered

Playback singers and their hit songs
Film music composers

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

The playback system explains everything

In Indian cinema the actor on screen is almost never the person singing. A separate artist records the vocal, and audiences follow those voices with the same devotion they give the stars miming to them. Some playback careers ran for five or six decades and covered tens of thousands of recordings.

That separation is why this quiz keeps asking who sang something rather than who appeared in it. The voice is the credit that counts.

Composers are credited as directors, and they are auteurs

The person who writes and arranges a film's music is billed as its music director, and the biggest of them are as famous as the filmmakers. A soundtrack is understood as their work, with a recognisable style carried across decades and languages.

Several questions name a film and ask who scored it. If you can hear the soundtrack in your head, the answer is usually reachable from its texture alone.

It is not only Hindi cinema

The last fifteen years have seen Telugu and Kannada productions become national and then international events, carrying their soundtracks with them. A couple of those songs became the most globally visible Indian music of their moment, including one that won an Academy Award.

If your listening is confined to Bollywood, this is the stretch where you will lose ground.

One or two voices dominate whole eras

This industry has a recurring pattern where a single singer becomes the default voice for romantic material for years at a time, appearing on an implausible share of the year's releases.

That concentration cuts both ways in a quiz. It makes some answers easy to guess, and it makes the questions that are not about that singer harder, because they are deliberately chosen from the gaps.

The Challenge

Singer and composer are different questions. A song has a voice and an architect, both credited, and the questions ask for whichever one you are less likely to have registered.
