About This Quiz

This is the general entry point to our Music category, and the only one here that is not about a particular scene, era or country. It mixes the practical side of music with the popular side: how instruments are built and played, what the formal terms for singing voices are, where certain genres came from, and which artists and bands are famous enough that their names function as common knowledge. Twelve questions, the lowest entry coins in the category, and genuinely the easiest of the five. Take it first if you are not sure which of the music quizzes suits you, because it will tell you quickly which direction to go. If the artist questions were the easy ones, the pop and world-hits quizzes are yours. If it was the instruments and terminology that came naturally, you have a musician's knowledge rather than a listener's, which is a different and rarer thing.

Topics Covered

Musical instruments
Legendary artists and bands

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Two kinds of music knowledge, and this quiz wants both

There is the knowledge you get from listening, which is artists, songs, genres and eras. And there is the knowledge you get from playing, which is instruments, technique and vocabulary. Most people have plenty of one and almost none of the other.

This quiz alternates between them, which is why a confident listener can suddenly stall on a question a beginner music student would find obvious, and the reverse.

Voices are formally classified

Singing voices are sorted into named ranges, a system inherited from classical music that is still standard in choirs and opera. The terms are Italian in origin and cover both high and low voices in each register.

Casual listeners tend to know one or two of these words and guess at the rest. They are worth learning, because they come up in any music context more formal than a chart show.

Instruments are asked about by construction

Rather than asking you to identify an instrument by sound, the questions here tend to describe how it works or how it is arranged: how many of something it has, which family it belongs to, whether it is struck, plucked or bowed.

That is a fair thing to ask, because these are details visible to anyone who has ever looked closely at the instrument, whether or not they can play it.

Genres come from places

Most named genres are tied to a specific country or city, and often to a specific decade there. The origin story is usually part of the genre's identity rather than a footnote.

If a question asks where a style began, it is asking about something the genre itself tends to be quite loud about.

The Challenge

It switches register constantly. A question about how an instrument is physically constructed can be followed immediately by one about a chart act, and those draw on completely unrelated parts of what you know.
