About This Quiz

Eighteen questions weighted towards the original trilogy, with a handful of entries from the prequels and from the television era that followed. That weighting is deliberate. The first three films produced the imagery that escaped into general culture, and a great many people can identify the ships, the droids, the weapon and the villain's breathing without ever having sat through a whole film. This quiz is built on that shared layer rather than on deep continuity. There is no expanded-universe material, no novel or comic content, and nothing requiring you to track the timeline across decades of releases. Where it does get harder is with the double identities, because this saga is fundamentally about people who are not who they appear to be, and several characters carry a birth name and an assumed one that the story treats as genuinely separate people for a long stretch.

Topics Covered

The central family and major characters

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

The imagery is public property

A freighter with an asymmetrical cockpit, a domed astromech droid, a desert planet with two suns, a glowing blade: these are recognised by people who have never watched the films, because they have been absorbed into general visual culture through parody, merchandise and forty years of reference.

That is why a franchise quiz this dense can sit at Medium. A great deal of it is not really fandom knowledge any more.

Almost everyone has a second name

This saga runs on concealed identities. Characters take new names when they change allegiance, hide behind titles, and are addressed differently by different factions. In at least two cases a character's public identity and their true one are treated as separate individuals for most of a trilogy.

Questions exploit this constantly, so read carefully for which name is being asked about.

Droids and ships are characters

The mechanical elements in this story are not props. Specific droids have personalities, loyalties and arcs, and specific ships are discussed by name with the affection normally reserved for people.

Their designations are alphanumeric and easy to garble, which is exactly why they make good questions.

Colour carries meaning

The energy weapons in this universe come in different colours, and the colour is not cosmetic. It signals allegiance or role, with particular shades associated with particular traditions and one shade in particular associated with a single character.

If a question asks about colour, it is asking about that system rather than about aesthetics.

The television era counts

The most culturally visible new character of the last decade came from streaming rather than cinema, and became a merchandising phenomenon almost immediately on the strength of one appearance.

A question or two reaches there. If your knowledge stops at the films, that is where the gap will be.

The Challenge

Assumed names are the whole difficulty. Several characters here are known by two names, and the questions will give you either one and ask for the other.
