About This Quiz

This is the general entry point to our Hollywood category and the easiest quiz in it. Eighteen questions drawn from the films that were unavoidable rather than the ones critics rank highest: the franchises that ran for a decade or more, the actors so associated with a single role that the two are hard to separate, the box office records, the awards. It is deliberately broad. Nothing here belongs to one cinematic universe, and no question requires you to have seen a film more than once or to remember anything beyond its most famous element. If you find it comfortable, the category goes considerably deeper: separate quizzes on the two biggest science fiction and superhero franchises, a wizarding school quiz, and two Hard ones built around villains and around identifying films from a single line of dialogue. Start here to work out which of those suits you.

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Some actors are inseparable from one role

Casting occasionally produces a match so complete that the performer and the character merge in public memory, and the actor spends the rest of their career being addressed by the character's name in the street.

Several questions rely on that. If a role feels like it could only ever have been played by one person, it probably was, and the association is the answer.

Franchises are the industry's actual product

Modern Hollywood is organised around series rather than standalone films. A successful property gets sequels, prequels, spin-offs and reboots, and the ones represented here have each run long enough to span the working lives of their casts.

Questions tend to name a distinctive element and ask which series it belongs to, which is the more forgiving direction.

Records and awards are separate measures

The highest-grossing film and the most acclaimed film are almost never the same, and this quiz asks about both. One director in particular has an unusual habit of holding the box office record and then breaking it himself.

The main American film award has a formal name and a universally used nickname, and it is the nickname that is being asked about.

Superhero cinema spans two rival publishers

The costumed characters in this quiz come from two competing comic companies with entirely separate film operations, and casual viewers frequently attribute a character to the wrong one.

Knowing which side a character belongs to resolves several questions before you get to the specifics.

The Challenge

Actor and character get used interchangeably. Some questions want the performer and others want the role they played, and answering the wrong one is the most common way to drop a point here.
