About This Quiz

Twenty questions, the longest quiz in our Hollywood category, covering the run of connected films that made shared cinematic universes the dominant model in blockbuster filmmaking. It concentrates on the first and most coherent stretch of that project, the arc built around the artefacts and the villain assembling them, rather than the sprawl that followed. Most questions ask you to connect a hero to the person underneath the mask, a weapon to its owner, a fictional material or nation to the film that introduced it. What makes this Medium rather than Easy is that it does not stop at the headline characters. It reaches for supporting figures, artificial intelligences, professions characters held before they gained powers, and one sequence of words that means nothing at all unless you have seen the specific film it comes from. Casual viewers will get most of it. Completionists will get all of it.

Topics Covered

The team and their civilian identities
The artefacts and the arc built around them
Legendary weapons and advanced technology
Heroes, villains, and supporting characters
Important locations and fictional nations
Character origins and memorable moments

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Two names each, and the quiz wants the quiet one

Every hero in this universe operates under an assumed identity, and the films spend far more screen time on the costumed name than the given one. Marketing, merchandise and conversation all use the hero name.

So being asked for the person rather than the persona catches people out, particularly for characters whose civilian life gets comparatively little attention on screen.

The artefacts are the spine of the story

The first decade of these films is held together by a set of coloured objects of immense power, each introduced separately and each associated with a fundamental aspect of reality. The villain's project across the whole arc is to collect them.

Knowing which object is which, and which film introduced it, covers several questions. They are easy to blur together because they are deliberately similar in presentation.

Materials and places are invented and specific

This universe has its own metallurgy and geography. A near-indestructible metal associated with one nation, another distinct alloy from a different corner of the same publisher's world, a technologically advanced country that conceals itself from the outside.

The two metals in particular are frequently confused, because they belong to characters who look similar and are often discussed together.

Characters had jobs before they had powers

Several of these figures were professionals in a specific field before the accident or decision that changed them, and those backgrounds are not decorative. They explain how the character thinks and fights.

One in particular was at the top of a demanding medical speciality, and that detail is asked about directly.

Some things only make sense if you saw the film

There is at least one question here built on a sequence of unrelated words that functions as a trigger phrase in a specific film. Out of context it is meaningless, and no amount of general franchise knowledge will recover it.

If you hit something that looks like nonsense, that is the one, and either you know it or you do not.

The Challenge

Civilian names are the recurring ask. These characters are known publicly by their hero identity, and the questions repeatedly want the name on the birth certificate instead.
