About This Quiz

Fifteen questions across all seven books and eight films, which is the first thing worth knowing about this quiz: it does not stay in the early, cosy part of the series that most casual fans remember best. The questions reach into the school and its houses, the teaching staff, the sport, the creatures, the specific incantations, and the darker mechanics of the later story that the first few instalments give no hint of. The series is unusual in how completely its invented vocabulary entered general use. People who have never read a page know what the houses are called and can name the school, which is why this is rated Medium rather than Hard. But the spell names and the plot machinery are a different matter, and that is where the questions concentrate. Fans who have read the books will find this straightforward. Viewers who saw the films once will find the second half considerably less so.

Topics Covered

School houses and daily life
Major characters and professors

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

The vocabulary escaped the books

Very few fictional worlds have exported this much language. House names function as personality shorthand for people who have never read the series, the school's name is instantly recognisable, and the sport is understood in outline by most of the population.

That widespread familiarity is why the quiz can be Medium rather than Hard. The general questions genuinely are general knowledge now.

Spells are pseudo-Latin and mean what they say

The incantations in this series are mostly built from Latin roots that describe the effect fairly literally. A disarming charm, a defensive charm that produces a guardian, a summoning charm: once you notice the pattern, the names become reconstructible rather than arbitrary.

That is the most useful preparation for this quiz. If a spell name is on the tip of your tongue, thinking about what the Latin would be gets you there more often than not.

The later plot mechanics are where it gets hard

The series changes shape as it goes. The early instalments are school stories with a mystery attached; the later ones introduce object-based magic and a much darker set of rules that the earlier books never mention.

Several questions live in that later material, including the villain's real identity before he took his assumed name. If your knowledge stops after the first few films, this is the stretch that will cost you.

Creatures and companions are individually named

The animals in this story are characters rather than set dressing. Pets, mounts and monsters all have proper names and specific relationships to the humans around them, and several are asked about directly.

The giant spider and the owl are both far more likely to appear in a question than the general concept of magical creatures.

The Challenge

Spells are asked for by effect. You are told what a piece of magic does and expected to produce the exact incantation, and the Latin-derived names are much easier to recognise than to recall.
