About This Quiz

Dragon Ball Z is built out of sagas, each one introducing a threat that makes the previous threat look manageable, and this quiz walks the length of that escalation rather than settling in one era. Eighteen questions spread from the arrival that reframes the hero's entire origin through to the final stretch. That structure matters for how you should approach it. Anybody who watched the show casually knows the middle arcs best, because those are the ones endlessly rerun and endlessly referenced, and the questions from the earliest and latest material are where scores tend to fall apart. The other thing worth knowing going in is that this series has two vocabularies. Characters carry birth names and adopted names, techniques have Japanese names that the English dub sometimes kept and sometimes replaced, and a handful of questions live precisely on that split.

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Sagas, not seasons

This show is organised around a sequence of self-contained arcs, each named after its antagonist, and fans navigate the series by those names rather than by episode numbers. Each arc raises the ceiling: the threat that ended the last one becomes an ally or an afterthought in the next.

The quiz samples across all of them. Knowing one arc extremely well will get you a middling score, because no single arc supplies more than a few answers.

The two-names problem

The alien race at the centre of this story gives its children names that most of the cast never uses, so several characters answer to one name for the entire series while technically having another. Villains use the birth name deliberately, as an insult.

That produces a very specific kind of question: it names a character one way and asks for the other. If you only ever watched a dub, or only ever read subtitles, you may have solidly absorbed one half and never encountered the other.

Family and lineage carry a lot of the plot

A striking amount of this series is about parentage. Who fathered whom, which characters are siblings, which relationships were hidden and later revealed. The plot repeatedly turns on a family link the audience did not know about.

Expect questions about surnames and about relatives who appear only briefly. The brief appearances are often the ones that matter most.

Techniques and transformations are separate things

It is easy to blur these together, and the questions do not. A transformation is a state the body enters, changing appearance and raising the character's ceiling. A technique is a specific move, usually with a spoken name and a fixed set of hand movements.

There is also a third category people forget: methods for combining two fighters into one, which have their own named mechanisms and their own rules and limits.

The mentors matter as much as the fighters

Nearly every major power jump in this series is traceable to a teacher, and several of those teachers are memorable comic characters rather than warriors. They tend to live in unusual places and be introduced as jokes before turning out to be significant.

The Challenge

Two names for one character is the recurring trap. Several figures in this series are known by a birth name and a used name, and the questions are happy to ask for whichever one you are less likely to have stored.
