About This Quiz

Almost everyone uses this platform daily and almost nobody knows anything about it, which makes it unusually good quiz material. Sixteen questions covering two things: the history, meaning the founding, the first upload and the acquisition that turned it into infrastructure, and the machinery, meaning the features creators live inside and viewers use without thinking. Rated Easy, because most of the answers are things you have seen thousands of times. The interesting part is how much of that is passive recognition. You know the awards sent to creators at subscriber milestones exist because you have watched people open them on camera, without necessarily knowing what they are called or which threshold earns which one. You use the recommendation surface every session without knowing its name. That gap between constant use and zero knowledge is where this quiz operates.

Topics Covered

Platform history and founding milestones
Creator tools and features
Short-form video and live streaming
Subscriber milestone awards
Viewer engagement and discovery
Ownership and platform evolution

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

It was not built by a big company

The platform started in the mid-noughties as an independent project by three former colleagues from an online payments company, and was bought roughly eighteen months later for what looked at the time like an extraordinary price and now looks like one of the best acquisitions ever made.

The first video ever uploaded was posted by one of those founders, is under twenty seconds long, and is still online. It is genuinely worth knowing what it shows.

Creator awards are a real programme

At certain subscriber thresholds the platform sends physical plaques, and the unboxing of these has become its own genre of video. There are several tiers, each with a different material and a different milestone attached, rising by factors of ten.

Most viewers know the middle tiers well and are hazy on where the ladder starts. That is exactly where the questions sit.

Short-form was a response, not an invention

The vertical short-video format was added to compete with a rival platform that had taken the format mainstream, and it arrived with its own name, its own feed and its own duration limit.

That limit has changed since launch, which is worth bearing in mind: the answer to a question about maximum length depends on knowing which limit is current.

Monetisation goes well beyond adverts

Creators earn from a subscription tier that removes advertising, from paid highlighted messages during live streams, from memberships and from merchandise. Each of these has an official product name.

The live-stream payment feature in particular is one of the platform's most distinctive inventions and is frequently discussed without ever being named.

The Challenge

The named surfaces are the difficulty. The page you land on, the awards creators receive, the paid message feature in live chat and the short-form format all have official names you have probably never said aloud.
