About This Quiz

This is the general entry point to our Technology category and by some distance the easiest quiz in it. Fifteen questions on the terms and companies that anyone who uses a computer or a phone has encountered, whether or not they went looking. Most of it is acronym expansion, which is the single most common form of technology trivia because the abbreviations are everywhere and the words behind them almost never are. The rest is matching well-known products and services to the companies that own them, which is harder than it sounds given how many familiar names belong to a small handful of parent firms. Take this one first if you are unsure where to start. If it feels too easy, the category has considerably harder places to go: a smartphone hardware quiz, a coding one, a Hard challenge on fifty years of one famous manufacturer, and a more advanced general technology test.

Topics Covered

Common abbreviations and terminology
Major technology companies and their products
Computer hardware fundamentals
Internet and web technologies
Web development basics
Popular software platforms and online services

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Technology runs on initials

Almost every component and standard in consumer computing is known by an abbreviation, and the full words are rarely spoken aloud. People buy storage, plug in cables and connect to networks using terms whose expansion they have never needed.

Most of the questions here are exactly that: a familiar abbreviation, and four candidate expansions of which three are plausible inventions. Reading the options carefully usually eliminates two.

A few companies own most of what you use

The consumer technology landscape is far more concentrated than the number of brand names suggests. Search, video, mobile operating systems, messaging apps and social platforms cluster under a small number of parent companies, often without any visible connection on the product itself.

That concentration is what makes the ownership questions worth asking. The answer is frequently a company whose logo never appears in the app.

Storage and processing are different things

The two most commonly confused pieces of hardware are the component that does the calculating and the component that holds the data. One is often described as the brain of the machine, the other has moved in recent years from spinning disks to solid-state parts with no moving pieces at all.

Both are known by their initials, and both appear here.

The web and the internet are not the same

The internet is the network. The web is one service running on top of it, invented decades after the network itself and responsible for pages and links specifically. Email and messaging use the internet without using the web at all.

It is a distinction almost nobody makes in conversation and one worth having straight, along with the language that structures the pages themselves.

The Challenge

Ownership is less obvious than it looks. A striking number of the most familiar apps and services are owned by companies whose own name is nowhere on the product.
