About This Quiz

This is the step up from the general Technology Knowledge Challenge in this category, and the difference is that it stops asking what things are called and starts asking what they do. Twelve questions across hardware, security, software development and the newer end of computing. It expects you to know which component handles parallel work rather than sequential work, what a firewall is actually protecting against, what a private network tunnel changes about your traffic, which language is used for what, and what the fundamental unit of a quantum machine is called. Rated Medium, and honestly rated: nothing here requires professional experience, but general familiarity with technology news is not quite enough either. If you found the easy technology quiz here trivial and want something with more substance without going as specialised as the coding or Apple quizzes, this is the right one.

Two kinds of processor, two kinds of work

The general-purpose processor in a computer is built to do a small number of things very quickly, one after another. The graphics processor is built to do an enormous number of simple things simultaneously, which is why it was originally for rendering images and why it turned out to be exactly what machine learning needed.

That difference explains why one company's graphics hardware became central to the recent machine learning boom, and it is worth knowing which company that is.

Security questions are about the attack, not the tool

The threats here are categories of attack rather than pieces of software. One is about deception, tricking a person into surrendering credentials by impersonating something they trust, and it is the most common way accounts are actually compromised.

The defences are similarly conceptual: something that filters what may enter or leave a network, and something that encrypts traffic and routes it elsewhere so it cannot be read or attributed locally.

Languages have territories

Programming languages are not interchangeable in practice. One dominates data work and scripting through readability, another was adopted as the modern standard for Android development after years of the platform using something older and more verbose.

Questions about languages here are usually asking where a language is typically used rather than about its syntax.

Memory is temporary by design

The component that holds what a machine is currently working on is fast and volatile, losing everything when power stops. That is not a flaw, it is the trade being made in exchange for speed, and it is what separates it from storage.

People conflate the two constantly, which is why the distinction is worth a question.

Quantum computing has one term you need

Conventional machines store information in units that are definitively one thing or the other. Quantum machines use a unit that can hold a combination of both states at once, and that unit has a specific name derived from the classical one.

You do not need the physics. You need the word.

The Challenge

Purpose questions outnumber naming questions. Being able to expand an acronym will not help when you are asked what the thing it names is actually for.
