About This Quiz

Vexillology is a real discipline with real rules, and national flags are far more systematic than they look. Designs cluster into recognisable families: crosses offset towards the hoist across one region, three vertical bands across another, a canton in the corner marking former membership of an empire. Once you can see the families, identifying an unfamiliar flag becomes reasoning rather than recall. This quiz has twenty questions built on that. Some describe an emblem that belongs to exactly one country, some describe a layout shared by several and require a second detail to resolve, and a few are about the genuine oddities, including the only national flag on Earth that is not a rectangle. Rated Medium. Flags are among the most reproduced images in the world, appearing at every sporting event and on every product label, so most people know more of them than they would guess.

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Flags come in families

A cross shifted towards the flagpole marks the Nordic countries, and they differ from each other mainly by colour. Three vertical bands of equal width is a template borrowed from revolutionary France by many nations. A small flag in the upper corner usually indicates a former constitutional link to Britain.

Learning the families is far more efficient than learning individual flags, and it converts a memory test into a process of elimination.

Some emblems belong to exactly one country

A maple leaf, a cedar, a mythical dragon, a bird perched on a cactus: these are unique enough that naming them names the country. They are the easiest questions here and they are worth answering quickly.

The central emblem is usually the fastest route in. If a flag has something in the middle that is not a geometric shape, that emblem is the answer.

Nicknames are official enough to be asked about

Several national flags carry affectionate names used in domestic and international coverage alike, usually describing the design in a phrase. These names are widely recognised and appear in this quiz directly.

One flag breaks the shape

Every national flag in the world is a rectangle except one, which is formed from two stacked pennants and reflects a much older tradition than the modern rectangular standard.

It is the single most asked flag fact in existence and it is here.

The Challenge

Several regions share a template. When a description could fit four neighbouring countries, the distinguishing detail is a proportion, an ordering of colours or a small central emblem rather than the overall design.
