About This Quiz

Memes are the only cultural form where everybody knows the work and almost nobody knows its title. You have seen these images thousands of times, used several of them yourself, and would struggle to name a single one under pressure. This quiz lives entirely in that gap. Fifteen questions describing a meme by its content, the animal or person in it, or the situation it is used to express, and asking what it is called. It covers the image-macro era, the viral video era and the reaction-image era, plus a couple of pieces of online shorthand that escaped into speech. Rated Easy, because recognition is near universal for most of these. Naming them is another matter, and that mismatch is the joke. The formats here are largely the durable ones rather than whatever is currently circulating, which means a lapsed internet user is not at much of a disadvantage.

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Names are descriptive, not clever

Meme names are usually a plain description of what is in the picture, assigned by whichever archive or community catalogued it first. A person doing a thing, an animal of a particular breed, two panels showing rejection and approval.

That means the name is often reconstructible. If you can picture the image, describing it plainly gets you surprisingly close to the accepted title.

Animals dominate the early era

A striking proportion of foundational memes are animals, usually photographed with an expression that reads as human. Specific breeds became attached to specific formats, and knowing the breed rather than just the species is sometimes the question.

One of the most enduring is built around a particular Japanese breed and a font choice, and it later lent its name to a cryptocurrency.

Some memes are videos, not images

A few entries here originated as clips rather than pictures: a mass-participation dance craze, a bait-and-switch link that redirects to a nineteen-eighties pop song, an animated loop set to a Japanese track.

The bait-and-switch one in particular became a verb, which is about as successful as a meme can get.

Reaction images come from unexpected places

Several of the most used reaction images are screenshots taken out of context from reality television, soap operas, stock photography and children's cartoons. The original source is usually far less famous than the crop.

Where a question describes an expression rather than a scene, it is pointing at one of these.

The Challenge

Every one of these is instantly familiar and almost none of them are things you have ever said out loud. The names exist, they are widely agreed on, and hardly anybody has needed to use them.
