About This Quiz

Phone specifications are the most widely read technical documents in the world. Hundreds of millions of people compare them before every purchase, absorbing acronyms and numbers without ever being told what any of it means, and then repeat the terms confidently in shops. This quiz tests what is actually behind that vocabulary. Fourteen questions on the companies that make the hardware, the firms that make the chips inside it rather than the phones around them, the wireless standards named after generations and distances, the display technology whose acronym nobody expands, the sensors that let a device know how it is being held, and the numbers printed on a spec sheet and what unit they are measured in. It is brand-agnostic on purpose. Loyalty to a particular manufacturer earns you no advantage here, and several answers point at companies most buyers have never consciously chosen.

Topics Covered

Leading handset brands
Mobile processors and hardware
Wireless connectivity standards
Display and battery technology
Smart devices and wearables
Sensors and emerging form factors

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

The company on the box is not the company in the chip

Most phone manufacturers do not design their own processors. A small number of semiconductor firms supply the industry, and their products sit inside handsets from many competing brands.

That separation is worth understanding, because a question about who makes the processor in a given class of device has a different answer from who makes the device.

Wireless standards are a family, not one thing

There are several separate technologies handling different distances and purposes: cellular generations counted in numbered steps, a short-range standard for connecting peripherals, and a very short-range one used for payments and tap-to-pair.

They get lumped together as connectivity and they are not interchangeable. Each question specifies a range or a purpose, and that is the clue to which one it means.

Display acronyms describe construction

The letters in a screen technology's name are a literal description of how the panel is built and how each pixel is driven. Nobody expands them in conversation, which makes the full form unfamiliar even to people who insist on that screen type when buying.

It is one of the longest acronyms in consumer electronics and one of the most frequently used.

Sensors are why the phone knows what you are doing

A modern handset contains a cluster of small components that detect movement, orientation and rotation. They are why the screen turns when you tilt it, why step counting works, and why games respond to physical movement.

Questions here describe a capability and ask what enables it, which is answerable by thinking about what the phone would need to measure.

Spec-sheet numbers have units

Battery figures in particular are quoted constantly without anyone saying what is being measured. Knowing what the number represents makes the comparison between two devices meaningful rather than superstitious.

The Challenge

Acronyms are the whole difficulty. Display technologies and connection standards are known almost exclusively by their initials, and the expanded versions are considerably less familiar than the abbreviations.
