About This Quiz

This is a survey rather than a specialist quiz. Eighteen questions moving between chemistry, physics, biology, astronomy and a few facts that sit somewhere between science and general knowledge. It stays firmly at the level of school science, the things almost everybody was taught before sixteen and has half-retained since: what water is made of and what temperature it boils at, what plants do with light, what sits at the centre of an atom, which scientist is attached to which famous idea. Rated Medium, and the rating comes from the breadth rather than the depth. No single question is difficult. What makes it work is that the disciplines rotate constantly, so you never get comfortable in one subject, and the questions you find easy will be different from the ones the next person finds easy depending on which parts of school you were paying attention during.

Topics Covered

Basic chemistry and atomic structure
Planets and the Solar System
Human anatomy and health
Plant biology and photosynthesis
Famous scientists and scientific discoveries
Animals and natural materials

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

School science, deliberately

Everything here comes from the syllabus almost everyone encountered before the age of sixteen: the formula for water, what plants take in and give out, what holds objects to the ground, what the centre of an atom is called.

That is the design. It is meant to be recoverable by anyone who sat through school science, whether or not they enjoyed it, rather than to reward specialist study.

Some facts are true only at standard conditions

The temperature at which water boils is the classic example. The familiar figure holds at sea level, and the actual boiling point falls as altitude rises and pressure drops.

The quiz uses the standard value, which is the one being taught and the one the question intends, but the caveat is worth knowing.

The blood cell questions come in pairs

There are two well-known types with two clearly separated jobs: one carries gases around the body, the other defends against infection. General knowledge quizzes ask about both, and mixing them up is one of the most common errors in this subject.

The same pattern appears with vitamins, where one is distinctive for being produced by the body in sunlight rather than absorbed from food.

The animal and materials questions are superlatives

Fastest land animal, hardest naturally occurring substance, largest planet: these are the sort of facts that circulate widely enough to count as common knowledge rather than science.

They are the easiest points here and worth taking quickly so you have time for the chemistry.

The Challenge

It switches discipline every question with no warning. A chemistry formula can be followed immediately by a question about plants, and there is no thematic run-up to help you settle into either.
