About This Quiz

Food travels faster than almost anything else in culture. Dishes that were regional a century ago are now on every high street on Earth, which means most people carry a working knowledge of half a dozen national cuisines without ever having visited the countries involved. Fifteen questions built on that. Which country a famous dish comes from, what the defining ingredient of a well-known dip actually is, which drink is the most consumed in the world, and which regional specialities have become national symbols. Rated Easy, and it genuinely is, because these associations are reinforced constantly by restaurants, packaging and television. The one place it gets harder is the ingredient questions, where you are asked what something is made of rather than where it is from, and a lot of people eat these things regularly without ever having thought about it.

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Dishes carry their country with them

A small number of dishes function as national shorthand, appearing in tourism campaigns and on restaurant signs worldwide. Those associations are strong, well-reinforced and rarely disputed, which makes them the most reliable questions here.

Where two neighbouring countries both claim a dish, the quiz uses the conventional attribution rather than taking a side.

Ingredients are the harder half

Several questions ask what a familiar food is actually made from. People eat these things regularly and have never needed to know the base ingredient, particularly for dips, dairy products and pastries where the finished product looks nothing like its components.

If a question names a food and offers four ingredients, think about texture and colour rather than trying to recall a recipe.

Some foods are geographic accidents

A few of the world's most identifiable products exist because of a specific climate or tree that only grows in certain places, which is why one country dominates their production entirely.

Those questions are really geography wearing an apron, and can be answered by thinking about where the plant grows.

The drinks question is about volume, not fame

The most consumed beverage in the world after water is not the one most heavily advertised, and the answer surprises people from countries where a different drink dominates.

Think globally rather than locally on that one.

The Challenge

Origin questions are easier than ingredient questions. Knowing where a dish comes from is cultural knowledge; knowing what is actually in it requires having looked.
