About This Quiz

Football knowledge splits into two halves that rarely overlap cleanly. There is the international game, which is tournaments every two or four years, national teams and a small number of legendary names that even non-followers recognise. And there is the club game, which is weekly, tribal, and requires you to follow a league to have any real grip on it. This quiz asks about both, which is the main reason it is rated Hard. Eighteen questions covering the recent World Cups and where they were held, the individual award that decides the sport's ongoing argument about who is best, the clubs where the biggest careers were built, and a couple of fundamentals about how a match actually works. It also asks about nicknames, which in this sport are close to official: several of the greatest players are more commonly referred to by a one-word epithet than by their full name.

Topics Covered

World Cup history
Legendary players
Famous clubs and stadiums
Player nicknames and achievements
Rules and match basics
Major international and club competitions

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

The individual award is the sport's long argument

Unlike most team sports, football has a prestigious annual prize for the single best player in the world, and its winners over the last two decades have been dominated by two players whose rivalry defined an era.

Questions about individual honours are usually about that award, and knowing roughly how the count between those two stands is more useful than knowing any specific year.

Great players are defined by one club

Careers in this sport move, but each of the biggest names is associated primarily with the club where they became what they were. That association survives later transfers and is how fans mentally file them.

So a question naming a player and asking about a club is usually asking about that defining spell rather than the full career history.

Nicknames are used more than names

Several of the greatest footballers are known globally by a single word, sometimes a childhood corruption of their name, sometimes a description of their play. In a few cases the epithet is so dominant that the legal name is genuinely unfamiliar.

Where a question offers a one-word answer among full names, that is the shape being tested.

The World Cup moves, and recently it moved somewhere unusual

The tournament rotates hosts every four years, and the last two editions were notable for their locations as much as their results, including one held in winter for the first time because of the host's climate.

Host questions are fair game and are the kind of thing casual viewers remember better than the results.

A few questions are just the laws

Amid the history there are basics: how many players a side fields, what a particular card means. These are free points for anyone who has played or watched, and they are included to stop the quiz becoming purely about memorising names.

The Challenge

It moves between the international game and the club game without warning. Following one closely and the other loosely, which describes most fans, leaves you exposed on half the questions.
