About This Quiz

Formula 1 is unusual among sports in that the machinery is as much a competitor as the athlete, and its fans track two championships at once: one for drivers and one for the teams that build the cars. This quiz reflects that. Fifteen questions covering the drivers who have won multiple titles, the constructors whose names have been on the grid for generations, the circuits that have hosted races long enough to become part of the sport's identity, and the mechanics of a race weekend, including how qualifying determines the starting order and how points are distributed at the finish. Rated Medium. The audience for this sport grew enormously in the last few years through television documentaries, which brought in a large number of fans who know the current grid extremely well and the history barely at all. This quiz spans both, and the older questions are where that newer audience will feel it.

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Two championships, decided differently

Points are awarded at every race and count towards both a drivers' title and a constructors' title. A team collects the points scored by both of its cars, which means a team can win its championship while neither of its drivers wins theirs.

The points distribution itself is worth knowing. The gap between winning a race and finishing second is larger than most people assume.

Some teams have been there since the beginning

One constructor has competed in every season the championship has run and carries a national identity that goes well beyond motorsport. Others have arrived, dominated an era and become synonymous with it, particularly through the hybrid period and the years that followed.

Questions here usually pair a driver with the team where they won their titles, and those pairings are the most memorable thing about any given era.

Circuits have personalities

A handful of venues are famous in their own right rather than for any particular race. One is a street circuit through a tiny principality where overtaking is close to impossible and qualifying therefore decides everything. Another is an old, fast Italian track where the crowd supports one team regardless of who is winning.

If a question describes a circuit's character rather than naming it, that description is the clue.

Qualifying decides the grid, and the grid decides a lot

The session before the race sets the starting order, and the position at the front has its own name. On several circuits, starting there is worth more than any amount of race pace.

That term is one of the few pieces of jargon in this sport that has escaped into general use, and it is asked about directly.

The greats are measured in titles

Driver reputation in this sport is counted in championships rather than wins, and the small group at the top of that list is the reference point for every argument fans have.

One driver from the eighties and nineties remains the emotional benchmark despite a title count lower than several who came after, which tells you something about how this sport remembers people.

The Challenge

It spans four decades of drivers. Knowing the current grid inside out covers perhaps half of it, and the rest comes from eras that finished before a lot of the sport's newer audience started watching.
