About This Quiz

Eighteen questions on the objects that changed how people live, and on the people credited with producing them. That word credited is doing a lot of work, and it is worth saying so up front. Invention is almost never a single moment: several people usually arrive at the same idea within a few years of each other, patents are disputed, and the name that survives in textbooks is often the one that filed first or commercialised best rather than the one who thought of it first. This quiz uses the conventional attributions, the ones taught in schools and printed in encyclopaedias, because those are the answers a general knowledge quiz has to work with. It spans navigation and printing through steam and industrialisation to communication, recording and eventually the web. Rated Hard, mostly because attaching the right name to the right device is a lot harder than recognising either in isolation.

Topics Covered

Communication inventions and their pioneers
Transport, aviation, and early motor vehicles
Printing, photography, and document technology
Scientific and measurement instruments
Navigation tools and industrial innovations
Networked computing and the modern web

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Credit is a legal outcome as much as a historical one

The standard story of most inventions is tidier than the reality. Several people typically worked on the same problem simultaneously, and the person remembered is often whoever reached a patent office first or built the business that made the thing ubiquitous.

This quiz uses the conventional attributions rather than trying to relitigate the disputes. Where you know a claim is contested, answer with the textbook name.

The famous names are also the wrong answers

A small number of inventors have become shorthand for invention itself, and their names get attached to devices they had nothing to do with. Those names are deliberately included as options on questions where they do not belong.

If an answer feels right because the name is familiar rather than because you associate it with that specific device, slow down.

Several entries are older than people expect

Navigation instruments, timekeeping devices, magnifying optics and printing all predate the industrial era by centuries, and in some cases originated well outside Europe long before their European reinvention.

The questions from this end of the timeline are about categories of device rather than individuals, because for most of them no single inventor can be named.

The web and the network are not the same invention

One is the global system of interconnected computers, developed over decades by many hands. The other is a specific application built on top of it decades later, with a single identifiable creator and a precise starting point.

Confusing the two is the most common mistake in this section, and the quiz asks about each separately.

The Challenge

A handful of famous inventors are attached in the public mind to far more than they actually produced, and those names appear as wrong options throughout. Recognising a name is not evidence it belongs to the device in the question.
