About This Quiz

Twenty questions, and this is the serious cricket quiz rather than the introductory one. The Basics Challenge in this category covers how the game is played. This assumes you already know that and goes after everything built on top: the record holders and what their records actually are, the World Cup finals and who won them, the oldest rivalry in the sport, the technical terminology that commentators use without explanation, and the fielding positions that make no sense to anyone who has not had them pointed out on a diagram. It is weighted towards the modern era and towards the subcontinent, which reflects where the sport's centre of gravity actually sits. Rated Hard, and it is. Casual viewers who watch major tournaments will get the famous names and lose ground on the laws and the positions, which is precisely the split it is designed to find.

Topics Covered

Legendary players and famous nicknames
World Cups and historic victories
Batting and bowling records
Laws and technical terms
International formats and tournaments
Fielding positions and match situations

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Records here belong to a small group

Cricket's batting and bowling records are unusually concentrated. A handful of players hold most of the significant marks, and in several cases the same person holds the record across more than one format, which means the same name is the correct answer to several different questions.

That concentration can work against you. When you see a name repeating, the instinct is to assume it must be wrong the second time, and it frequently is not.

Fielding positions are the hardest vocabulary in sport

Cricket names roughly thirty fielding positions, and the names are descriptive only if you already know the convention. They are defined relative to the batter's stance, which means the same physical spot has a different name depending on who is batting.

The positions closest to the wicketkeeper on the off side, where catches from edges are taken, are the ones most likely to come up. If you have never had the field explained to you, this section will be guesswork.

Dismissal laws have precise definitions

Several ways of getting out are known almost exclusively by an abbreviation, and the full phrase behind it describes the condition being tested with legal precision. It is one of the most argued-about laws in the sport and one of the least often spelled out.

There is also a question here about the maximum runs available from a single legal delivery, which is a genuine technicality rather than a trivia curiosity.

The formats have different lengths and different histories

The sport is played in three international formats with different durations, different tactics and different tournaments attached. The oldest rivalry belongs to the longest format and predates the others by more than a century.

Knowing which trophy and which record belongs to which format prevents most of the confusable answers here.

The Challenge

The technical questions decide it. Records and famous names are widely known, but the dismissal laws, the over counts and the fielding position names are things you only learn by playing or by watching very closely.
