About This Quiz

Some cars are more famous for ninety seconds of film than for anything they ever did on a road. This quiz is about those. Twenty clues, each describing a vehicle by the scene, the driver or the film that made it iconic, and asking you to name the machine. It sits across two kinds of knowledge that rarely live in the same person: you need to know cinema well enough to place the scene, and you need to know cars well enough to name the specific model rather than the general shape. That combination is why it is rated Hard, along with the fact that several answers require a precise variant rather than a family name. Knowing that a film featured a particular Japanese sports car is not enough when the options include three generations of it. It spans everything from nineteen-sixties spy films through to a racing drama released last year.

Topics Covered

Street racing franchise vehicles
Classic film and television hero cars
Supercars, muscle cars, and sports cars on screen

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Two kinds of screen car

Some are real production models that a film made famous, sold in showrooms and driveable by anybody. Others are purpose-built props that never existed as production vehicles, constructed for one production and instantly recognisable because nothing else looks like them.

The clue usually tells you which type you are dealing with. If it describes a role rather than a driver, it is probably the second kind.

Model designations are the difficulty

Enthusiast cars are identified by chassis codes and generation markers rather than by name alone, and film fans typically remember the shape while car fans remember the designation.

Where a clue involves a Japanese performance car from the nineties, expect the options to include several generations of the same model. Placing the film accurately is what narrows it.

One franchise supplies a disproportionate share

A long-running street racing series has put more cars into popular memory than any other production, and several of its hero vehicles are here. They span American muscle and Japanese imports, and they are associated with specific characters rather than with the films generally.

If a clue mentions a driver rather than a scene, this is usually where it points.

Some vehicles are the character

A converted hearse, a heavily armoured prototype, a talking sports car from a television series, a time machine with distinctive doors. In each case the vehicle has a name of its own and is treated by the story as a participant rather than transport.

These are the most recognisable entries in the quiz and the ones where the clue can afford to be indirect.

The Challenge

Generations and variants matter. Several clues point at a model that had many versions, and the options are built so that naming the family without the specific designation is wrong.
