About This Quiz

This is the general-knowledge entry point to our esports category, and it is the one to take first. Where the other quizzes here drill into a single scene, this one skims across the whole industry: the tournaments people organise their year around, the organisations that have outlived several games, the studios that own the biggest competitive titles, and the handful of players whose names escaped their own fandoms. Twelve questions, none of them requiring you to have followed a specific season. It is worth saying what esports knowledge actually consists of, because it is unusual. There is no single canon. A person can be deeply literate in one title's competitive history and completely blank on another, and neither is more legitimate. This quiz is built to reward breadth over depth, which means a casual follower of several scenes will likely beat a devoted follower of one.

Topics Covered

Major tournaments
Legendary players and organisations
The biggest strategy titles

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Organisations outlive games

The big esports brands are not tied to a single title. They field rosters across several games at once, enter and exit scenes as the money moves, and some have been operating since before the modern tournament circuit existed.

That is why a question can name an organisation without naming a game. The strongest of them are known for dominance in one particular title, and that association is what is being tested.

The prize pools tell you which tournaments matter

A small number of annual events function as each scene's world championship, and their names are known well beyond their own audiences. One of them ran for years with the largest prize pool in all of competitive gaming, funded directly by players buying in-game items.

Knowing which event belongs to which game covers a decent share of this quiz.

The publishers are also the league operators

Unlike traditional sport, most esports are owned outright by the company that makes the game. That studio decides the rules, the calendar, who may compete and whether the scene continues to exist at all.

A couple of questions ask who is behind a given title. Two of the largest competitive games in the world come from the same studio, which is worth having in mind.

Formats differ more than people assume

Team sizes are not standard across esports. Objectives are not either. One scene is built around planting an explosive, another around destroying a structure, another around being the last squad breathing.

Questions move between games without warning, so read for which title is being asked about before answering from habit.

The Challenge

Team sizes and objectives are asked about across different games, and they are not the same everywhere. Assuming the format you know applies universally is the fastest way to lose points here.
