About This Quiz

This quiz does one thing sixteen times: it names a model and asks who builds it. No logos, no founding dates, no country of origin, no specifications. Just the nameplate and the badge behind it. That single format is what makes it a step up from the Car Brands quiz in this category, because working from model to manufacturer is genuinely harder than the reverse. Brand names are advertised constantly and model names are not, and a lot of famous cars are known by a name or a code that gives no hint of who made them. The lineup runs from ordinary family cars that have sold in the tens of millions through to hypercars built in double figures, taking in electric models, performance sub-brands and off-road nameplates on the way. If you know cars at all, most of this will be automatic. The performance divisions and the alphanumeric designations are where it bites.

Topics Covered

Matching vehicles to their manufacturers
Sports cars and supercars

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Model to maker is the harder direction

You see manufacturer names on advertising, on dealerships and on the back of every car in traffic. Model names appear in much smaller type and are mostly learned by people who are actively interested.

That asymmetry is the whole design of this quiz. Anyone can name twenty car brands. Naming who builds a specific model is a different exercise.

Alphanumeric names hide their origins

A significant share of performance cars are known by a letter-and-number designation rather than a word. Those codes follow internal conventions that are consistent within a manufacturer and meaningless outside it.

If you recognise the pattern of a designation, you can often identify the maker without knowing the specific car, which is a genuinely useful shortcut here.

Performance divisions are separate companies in effect

Several large manufacturers own an in-house tuning arm with its own name, its own badge and often its own factory. Cars from these divisions are sold under a combined identity, and people frequently treat the sub-brand as though it were a manufacturer in its own right.

Knowing which parent each of these belongs to is worth a question or two.

The extremes come from very small companies

At the top of the range, the manufacturers are tiny. A car that costs more than most houses may come from a company that builds a few dozen vehicles a year, and the model name is often better known than the firm.

Those are the questions where general awareness runs out and actual interest takes over.

The Challenge

The questions require you to identify manufacturers from model names rather than the other way around. You'll need familiarity with vehicles across mainstream, luxury, performance, and electric automotive brands.
