About This Quiz

This is geography as the travel industry teaches it, which is a genuinely different syllabus from the one at school. Nothing here is about borders, populations or seats of government. It is about the places people save up to visit and the specific thing they go there to see: a city carved into rock, a mountain settlement reached by train, a group of islands where the water is the attraction, a city built where a city has no business being. Sixteen questions. You will find this easier than the other geography quizzes here if you read travel writing, watch documentaries or spend time looking at other people's holiday photographs, because that is where this knowledge comes from rather than from any classroom. It is also the most visual of the geography quizzes. Almost every answer is somewhere you could picture immediately if shown a photograph, and the questions are essentially asking you to do that from a description instead.

Topics Covered

World-famous landmarks and monuments
Historic cities and cultural destinations

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Destinations are known by their one thing

Travel marketing reduces most places to a single image: the ruin, the reef, the skyline, the mountain backdrop. That reduction is unfair to the places and extremely useful for a quiz, because it means the association is strong and widely shared.

Questions here lead with that one thing. If a description feels like a postcard, that is deliberate.

Cities defined by how they were built

A few of the world's great destinations are famous less for any single monument than for their form: a city built on water instead of streets, a city that rose out of desert in a few decades, a settlement carved directly into cliff faces.

These are the most distinctive clues in the quiz, because no two places solve the same problem the same way.

Islands are sold by their water

Tropical island destinations are rarely famous for anything on land. The attraction is the lagoon, the reef, the colour of the shallows, and the architecture built out over it.

Several island groups fit that description, so questions usually add a second detail such as the ocean they sit in or which country administers them.

Adventure travel has its own map

There is a separate circuit of destinations known for what you do rather than what you see: wildlife migrations, mountain sports, glacier and volcano landscapes, small towns that exist mainly as bases for the activity around them.

Those towns are the hardest answers here, because they are internationally famous within a niche and unknown outside it.

The Challenge

City, country and region are used interchangeably in the questions. Some ask where a landmark is at national level and others want the specific town, and answering at the wrong scale is the commonest mistake.
