About This Quiz

This is not a quiz about one Grand Theft Auto game. It reaches back across roughly two decades of the series, and that is the thing to understand before you start, because the most common way to do badly here is to have played only the most recent entry. Twenty questions, drawn from multiple games, multiple cities and multiple casts. You will be asked to attach names to protagonists, cities to the real places they parody, characters to the crews they run with, and invented brands to the games that invented them. The series has always built its worlds out of satire, so a lot of what is being tested is not plot but set dressing: the companies, the radio-advert culture, the parody of American life that the games are actually about. Players who have finished several of these games across the years will find it fair. Players who arrived with the newest one and stayed there will find it a lot harder than the Medium label implies.

Topics Covered

Main protagonists across the series
Cities, states, and iconic locations

Before You Play

Background and what to expect. No answers given away.

Its cities are parodies, and the parody is the clue

Every major setting in this series is a fictionalised version of a real American city, rendered close enough that anybody who knows the original recognises it immediately. The sun-bleached beachfront one, the cold industrial east coast one, the sprawling entertainment-industry one: each has a real counterpart and each was built to send it up.

Several questions work off this directly, describing the real-world inspiration and asking for the in-game name. If you can picture the place, you can usually get there without having memorised anything.

Names get reused at different scales

This is the single most reliable way to lose points. The series applies the same invented names to a city in one game and to a much larger region in another, and the games are separated by enough years that most players never had to hold both meanings at once.

Read those questions carefully. Whether you are being asked about a city or a state is usually the entire question, and the wrong options are built to punish reading it too quickly.

The satire counts as content

The invented brands, the social networks, the stock market, the radio commercials: none of it is background noise. It is the closest thing the series has to a thesis, and it is where a lot of its writing effort goes.

So there are questions about companies that do not exist and websites you cannot visit. If that feels like an odd thing to be tested on, that is because these games treat their fake consumer culture as seriously as their plots.

The older games carry as much weight as the new one

The protagonists of the early-2000s entries are still among the most recognisable characters the series has produced, and their nicknames and full names are both fair game. One character in particular is far better known by an abbreviation than by what it stands for.

If your history with the series starts after those games, this is the section to slow down on.

The Challenge

The trap is the series' habit of reusing names across different levels of its own geography. A word can be a city in one game and something much larger in another, and several questions depend on you knowing which is being asked about.
